Trinidad Fundadores

As with many Cuban brands, the Trinidad has an aura of mystique surrounding its origin and debate on its rank within the lineup of Habanos.

The line is said to have first been rolled in 1969 at the famed El Laguito factory, which is known for crafting personal blends for Castro, as well as the world-famous Cohiba brand. Former executives at El Laguito and even Castro himself debate on the cigar’s identity, with some claiming it was rolled as a superior blend to the Cohiba, and others claiming the cigars were a lower-tier cigar.

Trinidad, like Cohiba, was originally only offered as diplomatic gifts by Fidel Castro. The cigars were first offered for sale to the public in 1998 with the Trinidad Fundadores—a slightly larger version of its Cohiba sibling’s Laguito No. 1 size.

The cigars have since expanded to include 5 sizes:

  • Coloniales: 5¼” × 44 | Colonial (corona)
  • Fundadores: 7½” × 40 | Laguito Especial (lonsdale)
  • Reyes: 4⅜” × 40 | Reyes (petit corona)
  • Robusto Extra: 6⅛” × 50 | Doble (robusto extra)
  • Robusto T: 4⅞” × 50 | Del Valle (robusto)
